Guilt-Selective Functional Disconnection of Anterior Temporal and Subgenual Cortices in Major Depressive Disorder

Major depressive disorder is characterized by altered neural processing of guilt and self-blame. This study shows that patients with depression exhibit selective functional disconnection between the anterior temporal cortex and the subgenual cingulate during experiences of guilt. The findings provide important evidence linking disrupted moral emotional processing to the neural mechanisms of depression.
