Cognitive and Neural Foundations of Religious Belief

Religious belief is a hallmark of human life found in every culture, yet remarkably little was known about how its psychological structure maps onto brain systems. Combining a multidimensional scaling study of how people judge religious statements with a parallel functional MRI experiment, the authors identified three psychological dimensions underlying religious belief: God’s perceived level of involvement, God’s perceived emotion, and the doctrinal-to-experiential source of religious knowledge. Each dimension was localized to well-characterized brain networks — those supporting Theory of Mind for intent and emotion, abstract semantic processing, and imagery — while disagreeing with religious statements engaged the anterior insula among religious participants. The findings demonstrate that specific components of religious belief are mediated by ordinary brain networks rather than by a dedicated faculty, supporting contemporary theories that ground religious belief within evolutionarily adaptive cognitive functions.
