Dogmatism, belief rigidity, and the affective foundations of belief systems

This research line investigates the cognitive, emotional, and neural mechanisms underlying dogmatism and resistance to belief revision. It examines how individuals respond when core convictions are challenged, comparing belief systems often perceived as distinct, such as scientific and religious worldviews. Using behavioral measures, psychophysiology, and neuroimaging, the research explores whether belief violations trigger similar emotional and physiological responses across domains, suggesting a shared affective basis for dogmatism. By integrating cognitive neuroscience, psychology of belief, and philosophy of science, this line aims to better understand how emotions, identity, and threat processing influence belief maintenance, scientific reasoning, and openness to evidence.
