The Neural Basis of Moral Cognition: Sentiments, Concepts, and Values

Human morality — encompassing the feelings, judgments, and behavioral dispositions that define our sense of right and wrong — has long been a subject of philosophical inquiry but only recently became accessible to neuroscientific investigation. This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence from functional neuroimaging, lesion studies, and behavioral research to examine the neural mechanisms underlying moral sentiments (such as guilt and compassion), social concepts, and moral values. The authors argue that moral cognition cannot be reduced to a single brain faculty, but rather emerges from the dynamic interaction between distributed neural systems supporting emotion, social knowledge, and motivational processing. The review concludes that understanding the neural basis of cognition–emotion integration is essential for elucidating both normal moral functioning and its impairments in neurological and psychiatric conditions.
