Human Fronto-Mesolimbic Networks Guide Decisions about Charitable Donation

A defining feature of human altruism is the willingness to forgo personal material benefit in support of causes grounded in moral values — a capacity that extends well beyond immediate interpersonal interactions and finds expression in charitable giving. Using functional MRI while participants made anonymous decisions to donate to or oppose real charitable organizations, this study revealed that charitable giving engages the mesolimbic reward system — including the ventral striatum — in a manner similar to the receipt of monetary rewards. Additionally, donation-specific activations were observed in the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, a region associated with social attachment and affiliative reward, suggesting that the neural basis of altruistic giving integrates motivational and affiliative brain circuits beyond those activated by self-interested incentives. These findings provide a neural account of why charitable donation can be intrinsically rewarding and lay the groundwork for a neuroscience of human prosocial behavior.
